What is your favorite attraction at LEGOLAND® California?
Miniland USA. I loved building architecture and dollhouses as a child and that’s what Miniland is all about. No matter how much I build and repair in Miniland, it never gets old for me. The level of detail is so incredible that I see something new every time I am out there.
What is your favorite model that you’ve worked on in the Park?
The Play Dome and the Theatre Dome in the Kennedy Space Center section of Miniland Florida are two of my favorite models that I’ve worked on. It was the most amazing feeling when I saw guests had posted pictures of these domes on a LEGO fan website. I really respect the people out there that build as a hobby and knowing that they appreciated my work at LEGOLAND meant a lot to me.
What is the most challenging part of your job?
What’s great about this job is that almost every project has been challenging for me and like nothing I’ve ever done before.
What is the best thing about working at LEGOLAND California?
The best thing about working at LEGOLAND would be the variety of projects that I have been a part of. Somehow I have been able to use my diverse skills and experience on every project I’ve worked on so far.
Do you work with LEGO when you’re at home?
No, but my mom does and every now and then we get my brother and sister together at my parents house and we work on a city with all kinds of whimsical touches like a penthouse apartment that has a trap door and chute down the back for unwanted guests.
How many bricks would you guess that you own?
I had a small collection of LEGO when I was a child and I was always amazed at what I could build with just my imagination.
What was the first LEGO set you owned and how old were you when you received it?
I was three years old when I received my first Homemaker LEGO sets. They were each a room for a house and my dad put them together for me and said I could play with them when I was older because the box said they were for ages five and up. I immediately took them apart and built my own creation. My parents were so impressed they started buying me LEGO for every birthday and Christmas!
What did you want to be when you were a child?
I always knew I would be an artist. I had two aunts that were professional artists in New York City and I always admired them and felt that it was in my blood.
How long have you been creating with LEGO?
I played with LEGO throughout my childhood and now I get to do it professionally!
What creation are you the most proud of?
When I was a kid I built a really excellent dollhouse mansion all in white with working lights, furniture and a grand piano. I used to get architectural magazines for inspiration.
What would you like to build in LEGO that you haven’t already?
I would love to do a series of large size mosaics in the style of my acrylic paintings.
What qualities do you think would make a great model builder?
A natural fine artist with computer art skills, enthusiasm, people skills and a great sense of humor. Of course they would have to have experience building with LEGO and most importantly they need to be up for any challenge whether they are digging a hole to install a model in the ground or standing in front of a camera doing an interview for television.
What tips could you give to applicants on the model builder search?
You have to know how to build with LEGO but remember to be creative and be professional. It definitely helps to have other talents and skills besides LEGO, so let those things shine in your resume and portfolio as well. It may be those things that set you apart and get you noticed.
Name some of your hobbies other than creating with LEGO.
In my free time I like to draw and design characters, paint with acrylics on canvas, create digital art, make beaded jewelry, work in my garden, run with my dogs, play piano, sing and make music with friends.
