What is a model builder?
A “Model Builder” is a member of an elite team of talented artists who design, build and maintain the thousands of LEGO® brick models at LEGOLAND® California.
When and where will LEGOLAND be interviewing in my area?
The job search will be held at The Art Institutes at each city on the tour, nationwide. The schedule for the LEGOLAND Model Builder Search can be found on the homepage.
How do I pre-register for an interview spot in my city?
Log on to the homepage and follow the prompts on how to register. A limited number of pre-registered interview slots will be available in each city. We suggest you sign up early to insure you’ll get a chance to interview.
Will you also be interviewing for this position at the park?
No. Any individual desiring to be considered for this position must participate in the Model Builder Search.
Who can apply?
Anyone at least 18 years old who has a high school diploma, or equivalent, and is a legal resident, allowed to work in the US.
Will everyone who shows up be able to try out?
The Model Builder Moderators will try to see everyone who is interested in the position, however, there is no guarantee that everyone will be able to apply for the job in one particular city.
Should I bring any of my LEGO brick creations?
Due to limited space, it is not feasible for everyone to bring in their models. Candidates are encouraged to bring photo/drawing portfolios of their past projects. Candidates who pass the initial application process will be required to build a model on the spot for our judges to review.
What will the model building portion of the interview entail?
Applicants will have one hour to select their desired LEGO bricks from a ten-pound bin of assorted bricks and then to build a model of the LEGOLAND Model Builder Moderators choosing. All applicants will have the same amount of time and the same bricks offered to them.
Can I call the LEGOLAND Human Resources Department for more information?
Because of the large volume of information the HR Department processes, they will not be handling individual phone calls concerning this position. You can obtain the complete job description and basic qualifications on the Model Builder website.
How do I find out the results?
Within hours after the conclusion of the job search in each city, our on-location judges will determine the finalists for that city. Results for each city will be posted on the website, www.LEGOLANDModelBuilder.com later that evening. If you are a finalist, you will be contacted that evening.
What is the salary?
The salary for the position is between $13 and $15/hr, based upon education, skills, and experience.
What are the benefits?
LEGOLAND California provides a generous company benefits package, including a comprehensive medical, dental and vision plan, a 401K and other compensation and recognition. Model Citizens, as park employees are called, also enjoy on-the-job training.
Will LEGOLAND bring the finalists out to California for the final build-off in May?
Each of the winners will be responsible for their own travel costs. LEGOLAND will cover hotel accommodations and some meals for the days of the final interviews and the build-off at the park in May, 2006.
Is on-the-job training provided?
Yes, LEGOLAND California will provide extensive on the job training. The new Model Builder will work with a talented team of experienced professionals who will share the techniques they’ve perfected during their years with LEGOLAND. In addition, the new Model Citizen will receive media training, and have the opportunity to attend Human Resources development sessions offering topics ranging from team building to leadership and effective use of time.
Does the new employee get a contract?
LEGOLAND California, like all California Companies, is an “at will” employer. None of LEGOLAND California’s Model Citizens have a contract. All MCs are “at will” employees.
Does LEGOLAND guarantee job security?
Every employee in California is an “at will” employee. Through the extensive search efforts LEGOLAND is conducting to locate the perfect new Model Builder, the park is confident the most promising candidate will be offered the position. The Park MC’s are expected to adhere to LEGOLAND California’s guidelines for appearance and performance. These guidelines will be spelled out in detail for all the final candidates to confirm they understand and feel comfortable with LEGOLAND policies.
Does the new Model Builder get to travel and visit Denmark, the home of LEGO?
Model Builders represent LEGOLAND in many ways, often including travel.

Do Model Builders get to be on TV?
The Model Builders are seen as high-profile park ambassadors. When media interviews are scheduled, the strengths and availability of each team member will be considered to determine who will represent LEGOLAND for that particular event.
